Welcome to the first ever Penn Vet Italy group blog! We (7 female 2nd and 3rd year veterinary students and our advisor Dr. Carlo Siracusa) are currently en route to our destination of Teramo, Italy to study international animal welfare and public policy with the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell’Abruzzo e del Molise. Great initiative! Please don’t forget to critically analyze the entire ag-policy of Europe and consider putting your findings about animal welfare in the context of a heavily subsidized agrarian system. “Not everything is gold that shines over there”. Some of the largest scandals in the food industry have happened there / maybe still happening: recurrent Olive oil scandals and the more recent horse meat scandal. Travel safe and lots of luck.
